West Coast Drawings VIII
Curated by Norman Lundin
July 3 - August 1, 2009
Davidson Galleries and Koplin del Rio (Culver City, CA) are pleased to present West Coast Drawings: Drawings VIII. A multimedia group exhibition curated by Norman Lundin on display concurrently at these two West Coast locations.
This exhibition continues a tradition that began in 1991 at Koplin Del Rio gallery of hosting summer group drawing exhibitions. Conceived from the gallery’s distinct interest in works on paper, the original concept was to curate an in-house exhibition including many of the gallery artists, as well as invite artists from outside the gallery’s regular program. This show is the eighth variation on the original “Drawings” concept and will expand the geography of the exhibition to a venue in Seattle, Davidson Galleries, with an exchange of artists between the Northern and Southern West Coast. By broadening the scope of the exhibition, both geographically and conceptually, the gallery hopes to continue the enhancement of people discovering drawings.
As part of the complementary dual format, Norman Lundin, exhibiting artist and Professor of Art, Emeritus at the University of Washington, curated the exhibition. Works chosen for the show are rooted in classical representational traditions, but veer outside the expected in both media and style.

Kim Frohsin
Wigs and Silhouettes
May 7- June 27, 2009
Opening Reception: May 7, 5:30 to 7:30

Dolby Chadwick Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition of works on paper by Kim Frohsin, Wigs and Silhouettes. These energetic and bold works signify a breakthrough in Frohsin’s process. Abstracting the figure through color and collage, the resulting works are both engaging emotionally and aesthetically compelling.
The body of work included in Wigs and Silhouettes exemplifies an exciting shift in Frohsin’s way of working. Although the armature of the image is still taken from direct observation of the human form, these new works offer a fresh perspective to her artistic vision. Puzzle-like and spontaneous, the ground meets the figure as colors collide and create images that are at once organic and mechanical. Using mostly palette knives, razor blades and crushed pigment, Frohsin’s mark making is truly original and dynamic.
Michele Corriel of Western Arts and Architecture Magazine says of Frohsin’s work: “Painter Kim Frohsin harnesses the power of the female figure by incorporating startling color to impart movement. Her pieces crackle with vitality. Honest spontaneity and emboldened color palettes add to her directness with the pieces.”
Kim Frohsin has exhibited alongside Bay Area Figurative painters such as Elmer Bischoff, Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud. Frohsin’s work is included in the permanent collections of the San Jose Museum of Art and the Achenbach collection at de Young Museum in San Francisco. Nationally, she has exhibited widely including the LaGrange Art Museum in LaGrange, Georgia and The Frye Art Museum in Seattle, WA. She lives and works in San Francisco.
This will be her eighth solo exhibition at Dolby Chadwick Gallery.
